Our feet were designed to appropriately absorb the stress and shock of hitting the ground with standing, walking, and in sport. Daily activities, occupation, genetics and injury impact the alignment of our foot and ankle, and can contribute to structural and muscular imbalance, pain and injury.
Custom Foot Orthotics are designed to improve proper foot alignment and are important in preventing and treating injuries.
Benefits of custom orthotics include:
Optimizes biomechanical loading of the foot
Limits excessive pronation
Decreases strain on the plantar fascia and longitudinal arch during weight bearing
Weight bearing surfaces of the foot are more evenly distributed allowing for improved control and stability
Reduces muscle fatigue by balancing the architectural structure of the foot and ankle
Common injuries or conditions where orthotics can help decrease symptoms:
Plantar Fasciitis Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Achilles Tendonitis Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Peroneal Tendonitis Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
Posterior Tibial Tendonitis/Insufficiency Low Back Pain
Bunions & Hammer Toes Hip Pain
Neuroma’s in the foot Ankle Sprains
Each of our skilled Physical Therapists at Chandler Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab are trained in orthotic assessment and prescription to put your foot in a custom device that suits your activity level, current complaints and goals. These devices are specifically fitted and molded to the exact shape of your feet. Once it is determined that orthotics would be a beneficial component of your rehabilitation process, you will receive a thorough gait, biomechanical and foot/ankle evaluation. A plaster mold will be made of your foot and sent to a lab for fabrication. Your Physical Therapist will work with the lab to ensure that you receive the best device, fit and materials needed for your orthotic.
If you have further questions or are interested in obtaining custom orthotics, please consult with your Physical Therapist.
