personalized Blood Flow Restriction

Personalized Blood Flow Restriction

Have you ever experienced a muscle burn during high intensity exercise? Chandler Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab is excited to announce the arrival of Personalized Blood Flow Restriction (PBFR)! This innovative technology uses a specialized medical tourniquet system which reduces blood flow during exercise. By reducing blood flow to either the upper or lower extremity it temporarily deprives the muscle of oxygen forcing the target tissue to activate the Lactic Acid Cycle. This cycle which creates the “burn” often experienced with high intensity training causes a cascade of physiological benefits which have been demonstrated in research to increase muscle size and strength.

PBFR allows patients to appropriately stress and build muscle in a safe and controlled environment using loads of 20% of a 1 repetition max. This means that patient’s recovering from surgery or injury, the elderly or athletes in a competitive season can increase muscle size and strength using lighter and safer loads.

This rehabilitation and performance tool has been widely used in the military to return injured soldiers back to active duty and has gained popularity with professional and collegiate athletes. Chandler Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab is the first physical therapy office in Winston-Salem to offer this innovative technology to its patients.

Chandler Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab uses the Delfi Personalized Tourniquet System (PTS). This system utilizes advanced safety features such as limb occlusion pressure personalized to each patient which can minimize complications. A built in Doppler system safely regulates and controls the personalized pressure during application.A typical PBFR treatment last 6-8 minutes and may be performed 2-3 times a week as part of an overall rehabilitative plan.

Patients with circulation or peripheral vascular compromise, sickle cell anemia, extremity infection, cancer, severe high blood pressure, open fractures and tumors would not be a good candidate for PBFR.In summary, PBFR using the Delphi PTS is a safe and effective means to adequately stress muscle in order to cause hypertrophy and strength gains while protecting the injured or post-surgical patient and enhancing overall athletic performance. We sincerely thank you for choosing Chandler Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab as we strive to provide the best outcomes possible.
