Sacroiliac Dysfunction

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) bridges the triangular sacral bone, at the end of the spine and the pelvis bone in the hip. This joint acts as a shock absorbing structure during activities such as walking and running. The abnormal or awkward twisting movements of the body in the course of sports activity can lead to its irritation and dysfunction. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can result in back pain and pain in the leg. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can result from too much mobility (hypermobility) such as after a pregnancy or traumatic injury or too little mobility (hypomobility) which can result from age and flexibility deficits. Your physical therapist will determine the best course of treatment for your SIJ dysfunction based on a thorough exam.
